Summary: It is often hard for modern men to understand that envy is considered one of the seven ‘capital sins’. Therefore, this article seeks to describe its - manifold - malum, exploring the different meanings of the concept of invidia. Jealousy, envy, resentment derive from a self-weakness which can become ‘sociopathic’. At the same time, however, looking at (ancient-) philosophical and Christian-monastic traditions can show us possible strategies of conquering envy which may even lead us to amor felicitates alienae.
