Summary: Freedom of expression, and hence of the press – and more generally, of the means of social communication, the “mass media” – is among the fundamental rights that undergird any free society of free persons. At the same time, the right to be unharmed in one’s own person, not only physically but also morally, pertains to the essential rights of the human person. Each of these rights needs to be safeguarded in itself, and both must be reconciled within an organic whoe. This article sets forth the protections accorded them, separately and in interrelationship, in the European human rights convention, the expression and safeguard of the supreme values of the Continent, and itself an exceptionally siìgnificant building block of the international edifice of human rights protections.
